Hurray! 🍾 🎉 We Finally Have Harry Reid International Airport
Hurray!
In the throes of a generation-defining global pandemic, the all-Democrat Clark County Commission just authorized the renaming of McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada to become the Harry Reid International Airport… Hurray!
Here are some of the great things Harry Reid has done to earn their support:
He voted for both the first and second Iraq Wars and the Patriot Act.
He voted for the anti-same-sex marriage Defense of Marriage Act.
He straight up lied and brags about lying about Mitt Romney not paying his taxes during the 2012 presidential campaign.
He made racially insensitive remarks about President Barack Obama.
He introduced a bill to end birthright citizenship.
He killed a bipartisan immigration reform bill because his megadonors didn’t like parts of it.
He lied about Bernie Sanders’ supporters getting violent at a Democrat Convention and never apologized for it.
He and his sons have personally profited off of several shady land deals in Nevada.
He happily created the nuclear option in 2013 which was an anti-democratic move to hurt the minority party in the Senate.
Also… who is Harvey Whittemore?
Of course, there are a ton of explanations and equivocations for Reid’s past actions. But the answer to this problem was a catchy, non-person renaming focused on Nevada’s diverse history or geography, not another person who is still living and will be eventually canceled by the unforgiving 20/20 Hindsight Committee the Internet has become.
I think a lot of us support removing McCarran’s name for his problematic past, but swapping it with Harry Reid’s name is exchanging one politician with a checkered past for another.
Additionally, is this the best use of the Clark County Commission’s time during a global pandemic? The County Commission says it will (ONLY!) cost $2 million to change, but maybe we could put that $2 million they plan to raise from private funds into helping the homeless, unemployed Nevadans or the countless small businesses closing down right now?
